Chinese people are good at looking at the face (speech), old friends have not seen each other for a long time, meet each other to say that they look good. Chinese medicine diagnosis is concerned about the look, smell, ask, cut, look at the diagnosis is to check the face first.

Most people think face is face, people live face tree live skin, face is lost, face is swept away, all refers to the loss of face. In fact, what people are talking about here is just the “face”, no “face” anything. Yan is a part of the face, especially the two eyebrows, the middle of the two eyes.

顏 (顏) is a character with the form of sound and meaning, from 彦 (彦), the form of sound, and from 页 (页), the meaning of meaning. All Chinese characters related to the head have the radical “页”, such as cranium, zygoma, forehead, neck, neck, and yi.

Xu Shen of the Eastern Han Dynasty said in Shuowen Jiezi: “Yan, between the eyebrows and eyes.” Duan Yuche notes, “Yan is between the eyebrows, the medical scripture is called Que, the Taoist book is called Upper Dantian, and the phase book is called Zhongzheng Yin Tang.”

According to the Shuowen Jiezi, Yan refers to the middle of the eyebrows, including the inner corner of the eyes and the upper end of the nasal bridge (Shan Gen). According to Duan Yuche’s interpretation, Yan is confined to the middle of the two eyebrows. In any case, Yan is only a partial part of the face, and certainly an important one.

In this way, the color is not the color of the face, but refers specifically to the luster and color of the hall of the seal. Chinese medicine believes that the Hall of the Seal and the root of the mountain point is the Governor’s meridian, which is a strange point outside the meridian. The Governor’s Vessel is Yang, which is warm and belongs to the eight odd meridians that run the vital energy, originating from the Dantian in the lower abdomen, exiting the perineum, passing through the anus, going straight up along the tail vertebrae, inverting the top of the hundred, and then descending to the Hall of Indigo, the root of the mountain, the bridge of the nose, and ending in the middle of the upper gums.

The inner canthus between the eyes is the starting point of the foot solar bladder meridian (eye-mind point), which travels upward past the eyebrows (Zanzhu point) to intersect at the top of the inverted hundredth meeting, then descends along both sides of the Directing Vessel and ends at the outer side of the little toe.

The Yan (Yin Tang and Shan Gen) is wrapped by the body’s hottest Directing Vessel and wrapped by the second-hottest Foot Sun Bladder Meridian, so of course a normal, healthy person should be glowing and shiny.

If the color is gray, obscure, or even dark spots or dots appear, then there must be a problem with the Directing Vessel or the Bladder Meridian that is not hot enough (Yang deficiency) or too cold (Yin reality).

A person’s physical health problems, is bound to affect the psychological and emotional, physical and mental problems are bound to affect work and life, the so-called bad luck is not lucky is also logical.

With the popularity of air conditioning, refrigerators, Chinese people blindly accept the Western way of life without regard to their own physique, cold drinks, ice cream, raw food and other changes in eating habits, coupled with food pollution, pesticides, veterinary drug residues, and the abuse of antibiotics and other medical diseases, resulting in a large number of people self-inflicted Yang Qi, the body accumulation of Yin cold Qi. One of the most prominent manifestations of this is the dullness of the face and color.

Particularly frightening is the killing of children by such eating habits. Young children are supposed to be pure yang bodies, but nowadays many children have insufficient yang energy, delayed growth, no tooth replacement, no growth, bedwetting, anorexia, and some even have rhinitis and asthma.

These children have blue veins (veins) across the root of the mountain, blue and dark, which is a sign of cold and dampness entering the blood and weakened kidney yang. With acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal treatment to warm the yang, together with diet, avoiding cold, fruits and cold drinks, most of the symptoms can be eliminated and the veins at the root of the mountain can eventually disappear.

Some people may say that a red and shiny Yin Hall means good health. That’s not quite true. In Chinese medicine, it is important not to go to extremes, as too cold or too hot are both pathological.

The luster of the Hall of Indigo is influenced by the fullness of Yang Qi and also helped by the moistening of Yin Blood. Dark qi and black spots indicate excessive evil qi, no luster and darkness indicate a lack of yang qi in oneself, excessive luster and redness indicate too much fire qi, and dryness and redness indicate that yin blood has been drained.

I once treated a lady who was heavily manic and had insomnia all night. Her face was flushed, with two cheekbones and the Hall of the Seal red and red. In Taoist practice, the Hall of the Seal is used as the upper Dantian, and at a certain level of kung fu practice, the spirit can be concentrated out of the body, and the eyes are closed tightly but the outside world can be perceived through the Hall of the Seal. Myths and legends of Erlang Shen and Ma Wang Wang all have this ability.
