Adenoids, also known as pharyngeal tonsils, are similar to tonsils. They grow with age, reaching their maximum size at about 6 years of age and gradually shrinking after 10 years of age. Adenoid hypertrophy occurs mostly in children and is often combined with chronic tonsillitis and tonsillar hypertrophy.

1 Etiology

Adenoid hypertrophy is due to recurrent inflammation of acute and chronic rhinitis, tonsillitis, influenza, etc., pathological hyperplasia occurs, thus causing increased nasal obstruction, obstructing nasal drainage, rhinitis sinusitis secretions and stimulate the adenoids to continue to proliferate, forming a vicious circle of mutual cause and effect.

2 Clinical

The main clinical manifestations of adenoid hypertrophy are anorexia, vomiting, and dyspepsia in children, followed by malnutrition, respiratory distress, and lack of lung expansion, and in severe cases, an “adenoid face”.

3 Treatment

01 General treatment

Pay attention to nutrition and improve immunity. As the adenoids gradually shrink with age, the condition may be relieved.

02 Nasal spray

Children often have rhinitis and sinusitis, which can be treated locally with nasal spray hormone and saline, and the clinical symptoms will be reduced after a period of time.

03 Surgical treatment

If conservative treatment is ineffective, adenoids should be surgically removed as early as possible.

04 Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Chinese medicine treatment should follow the treatment principles of dispersing wind and cold outside, clearing the heat inside and resolving phlegm and dampness at the same time, tonifying qi and blood for those who have deficiency of qi and blood, and clearing the liver and relieving depression for those who have fire in the heart and liver, and clearing the heart and removing annoyance. The specific methods are as follows.

1, Dispersing external cold

Put a towel soaked and heated on the forehead, replace the hot towel after it becomes cool for 30 minutes.

You can take your child to the sun for 1~2 hours every day, with your back to the sun.

2, Food therapy

You can consume ginger and brown sugar water.

lotus leaf, poria, Chen Pi, winter melon, barley, yam, lotus seeds, etc.

4 Prevention
